The Desert Island Challenge

Shamelessly copying jimini, I also uploaded 24 album covers for the Desert Island Challenge on flickr.
Musical Pantheon ?
OK, here is my list :

  • Franck Black : Teenager of the Year. In my opinion, his best album as Franck Black, and maybe even better than his pixies albums (don't throw garbage at me, please...)

  • Rachid Taha : Made in Medina

  • Primal Scream : XTRMNTR

  • Asian Dub Foundation : R.A.F.I

  • PIL : Metal Box. With this, I don't have to add Never mind the Bollocks...)

  • Miles Davis : Jack Johnson. Yes, I also like jazz music (or maybe Miles Davis music, who knows ?)

  • Sonic Youth: Experimental Jet Set, trash and No Star

  • Lou Reed : New York. The dark side, AIDS, Latino gangs, etc...

  • The Beastie Boys : hello nasty

And now, some more extreme stuff :

  • Ministry : Filth Pig. Fans tend to dislike this one, I don't know why...

  • Lars frederiksen and the Bastards : Rancid leader remembers his early years (it is punk at its best)

  • The Stooges : Fun House !!!!!!!!!!

  • Cursed : One

  • Slayer : Reign in Blood

  • Atari Teenage Riot : 60 seconds Wipeout.

  • Aes Dana : Formors. Excellent French Celtic Black Metal band

  • Destroyer 666 : Phoenix Rising : Yes it is Death Metal, but if you hear it without preconceived ideas you will find that good Death metal is not about noise, but about music (OK, loud enough !!)

  • Venom : Black Metal

  • Unleashed : Where No Life Dwells

  • Converge : You Fail Me

  • Vorkreist : Sublimation XXIXa : Excellent French Death Metal band

  • Satyricon : Now, Diabolical.

  • Carpathian Forest : Fuck You All !!

  • Helmet : Born Annoying

There are so many more albums I would have liked to put here, but there was only room for 24. I will still be able to blog about them.

Good Job !!

Death metal will always rule !!

A short explanation :
wikipedia administrators tend to be very conservative regarding criteria for adding articles about bands. Not that I blame them, because as anybody with an account can begin a new article, surely any day tons of articles on micro-subjects are created (why not an article about my local supermarket, for example ?).

But this attitude is sometimes annoying, as it is difficult to create new articles about underground bands which are not deleted a short time afterwards. And trust me, you have to provide a LOT of facts to undelete them...

One month ago, I created an article about the American Death metal band Job for a Cowboy. I didn't knew somebody else tried to create the very same article one year before. The previous article was deleted because the band seemed not to comply with wikipedia's Notability criteria. Of course, my new creation was deleted too.

To undelete an article in wikipedia (in this case, to overturn a previous deletion), you need to achieve a consensus in a sort-of formal process. With some other Death metal fans, we were able to achieve this !!

Rejoice, you geeks

Found on digg, here is the largest BIOS screen you will ever see in your life (it happened in Times Square) :

Beware folks, if technology begin to fall to pieces, it definitely means that the beams sustaining the Dark Tower are crumbling. Beware the Crimson King !! Beware the low men !!!

The first CUT is the DEEPEST

Hey, may be you already heard this old Cat Stevens cover song ? Apart from Cat Stevens himself, a lot of other artists sung it, making it become one of the most widely known ambiguous sugared love song.

I'm sure that you never heard about this version, performed by the evil Black Metal band Carpathian Forest. I must confess that only the title is borrowed from the song, the rest truly deals about the opposite of love (Death , anti-Christianity, Satan). This song perfectly express the overall feeling of the album :

Let's compare the chorus of the old saccharined love song :

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first
that's how I know

with the black metal anthem :

Step forth to the Devil's Warfields
And see His world through possessed Satanic eyes...
I am the enemy of God !!!
And the purest fire burns within...
A hunger for Death !!!
The world Abyss !!!
You live like filth under your false judeo-god...
The first CUT...
A man-made black messiah !!!

Which version do you prefer ? (you already know which is mine)

Strictly confidential...

Virtual Warrior

See this picture of a Zombie hunter in Left 4 Dead, the upcoming four player co-operative zombie shooter. Don't you think he is funny, an unholy mix of a heavy metal warrior, a Rasputin impersonation, and a mad killer escaped from a cheap Slasher ?

Not finished yet

One more post about The Fountain. And first, another picture, of course not saying too much (if you want real spoilers, go here).

What does this picture represent ? A Christian ride bathed in a fantastic pre-Christian sunset ? The path for some burning pagan revenge ? The seek for the last golden truth ?
Maybe not so far away from this last one, but still, this is so simple at the end, so simple that maybe there is no need to seek ?

But first, consider your death.

Now you're asking yourself if I've suddenly become insane, and what about this movie in the first place ? Maybe you will now avoid The Fountain for the next fifty times you'll go to the cinema.

Don't make such a mistake. I assure you, you will understand what I'm saying.

And : this movie just shows you possible directions to the story. This movie gives you the freedom to write your own ending.

Trust me, this is so rare you must take the risk.

Finish it

Last Friday, following an advice from one of my friends (thanks Milambre), I saw The Fountain, the last Darren Aronofsky movie. As usual, I managed to go to the cinema at the last moment before the beginning of the screening (I almost expected not to see the beginning, which would have been a problem, especially for this one).

I stepped in the (small) movie theater, and after a few minutes, its beginning... was utterly unexpected. My friend said that seeing this movie was like experimenting dying, then rebirth, and yes it is so true (this is a painful process). Lets say that all the movie feels like the last thoughts of someone dying (NOT A SPOILER there, I only say that it feels like it, not that this is the end of it). There are three stories entangled together, each at a different period, and seemingly not related, but it ends that they all tell the same story of love and death. This is also a story about story telling itself.

This is not a mainstream movie, but this is a movie that says a lot about its director, and well about you too as a viewer. It is risky, it is uncompromising, but trust me : it is worth seeing.

The man Jesus was a basketball player

I bet you all saw it now, but not bad to see it once more, eh ? This is a hilarious video of Meat Sandwich, committed by the Metal / Trash / Punk / whatever band Gwar (many thanks Elise) :

Slay them all let them come, let them come, let them come
They've come for
Meat Sandwich (crucify)
.

Ain't they funny as hell ?

Oh Boy !!

Well today, we're introducing THREE revolutionary new products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary new mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough internet communications device.
An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator. An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator…. these are NOT three separate devices! And we are calling it iPhone!
.

OK, but... despite the price... despite the fact that is will only be available in Europe at the end of the year... it is not possible not to want to have one in the corner of your brain, like a kid for a new shiny overpriced toy (at least for me, and I does not imply that I will buy one at the end). It may be another typical Steve Jobs reality distortion field, but still...

Update 14/01 : Here is an interesting Apple insider's view about Steve Jobs himself, or how to tell customers what they need, them being grateful for the advice..

Being extreme

May be some of you already know all about Converge. It's an extreme hardcore american band, and I am an absolute fan. As their front man, Jacob Bannon, said once in an interview :
For people not familiar with our music, they may not be able to differentiate these things, but they would if they listened with the right ears. It's not trashy noise and it's certainly not rage for rage's sake. It's about learning to coexist and combat the issues at hand. It's about becoming a better person. This is part of that path for me as it is for all of us in some way. Some may call it predictable, but I call it therapy. It's the foundation of what abrasive music is.

For Christmas, I bought You Fail Me, one of their best albums, for one of my cousins (they are two amazing girls, this one loves punk, hardcore and all that stuff). She quickly put the CD on the stereo, and strangely, my mother, who was there, said she liked the sound (don't laugh, she normally highly prefer classical music, and she is not deaf - so maybe I should start to bother).

Trust me, this is not middle of the road metal (like so many bands now), this is some really extreme stuff; and I don't think it can qualify as emo (I don't like emo). May be you will not like it, but go to this site, and make your own opinion.

P.S.: It is said that their gigs are so crazy that it can be scary. Also Jacob Bannon does himself the artwork of their albums, he has a very distinctive (if a bit depressing) style.

New Year's Shit

Hear me, hear me very well : shit is not about shooting people, this is about shooting the Tower like a thousand other people the same day.

Update : the skaters were really amazing.

Some Death

OK, now I have updated the blog main page a little, there is now a little blog roll on the left, and linked properly to my myspace page. Enough for tonight...

Still, I can't resist to link to a video of the band Death Breath, found on absolutnoise, a blog about Swedish rock music (sadly the blogger does not like metal so much). For once the Zombie is the real star. I would not like to smell his - or its - foul breath, but of course it's all about it ;-).

Just a test

Testing, testing. One, two, three...
Testing, testing, One, two, three.
